Amy Atwater tore off her racing helmet, the adrenaline still pumping. She had just finished a spin around the Pikes Peak International Raceway’s oval in a stock car, courtesy of the track’s new partner, the Richard Petty Driving Experience.

Her drive signifies the operation’s shift into a new gear, as the track is being transformed from a spectator venue to a motorsports mall where regular folks get to participate.

“It’s a pretty fundamental change to go from spectators to participation,” said PPIR spokesman Vince Salas. “It’s one thing to come and sit in the grandstands; it’s a whole other thing to sit behind the wheel.”

Or, as Atwater said to friends in the flush of excitement: “It’s scary as hell but it’s fun. We can definitely sell that, over and over.”

(November 19, 2009) – The 42nd Annual Kronik Energy Western World Championships presented by Old Tucson Studios kicked off with Sammy Swindell and Jerry Coons, Jr., racing to victory lane in Thursday night's 25-lap qualifying features atop the 3/8-mile USA Raceway clay oval.

Sprint Car legend Swindell bested the Lucas Oil Sprint Cars presented by K&N Filters ranks in the 25-lap winged main event to earn the pole position for Saturday night's $15,000-to-win championship finale, with Coons decimating the Discount Tire Co. ASCS Canyon Region ranks for the pole in Saturday's $5,000-to-win main event.

With 64 drivers taking part in Thursday night's Old Tucson Studios preliminary action, including 39 winged competitors and 25 wingless racers, the second half of the Western World field will take to the track in Friday's Kronik Energy Qualifying event.

Tony Schumacher clinched his sixth consecutive and seventh overall NHRA Full Throttle Top Fuel world championship and Hector Arana earned his first in Pro Stock Motorcycle during a dramatic day of racing at the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals. Both titles were decided during a stunning semifinal round.

Schumacher collected the Top Fuel crown when Larry Dixon, racing directly in front of Schumacher, smoked the tires of his Alan Johnson/Al-Anabi Racing dragster and lost to Spencer Massey. In a surprising twist, Schumacher also lost his semifinal match with Antron Brown, meaning the final points result was just two points in favor of Schumacher and his Mike Green-led U.S. Army team, earned on their low qualifying pass late Saturday.

Carl Edwards Win Postpones Kyle Busch's NASCAR Nationwide Series Clinching Party

AVONDALE, Ariz. (November 14, 2009)-- Carl Edwards won Saturday's Able Body Labor 200 to postpone Kyle Busch's formal NASCAR Nationwide Series championship clinching party for one week.

But Busch still had cause for celebration. With a 190-point lead entering next Saturday's season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Busch needs merely to start the Ford 300 to claim his first title in one of NASCAR's top three national touring series.

Saturday's race also fanned the smoldering rivalry between polesitter Denny Hamlin and fifth-place finisher Brad Keselowski into full flame. AVONDALE, Ariz. (November 3, 2009) -- Kevin Harvick held off Kyle Busch to take the checkered flag in Friday night's Lucas Oil 150 at Phoenix International Raceway, but the big winner was Ron Hornaday Jr., who secured his record fourth NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship with a fourth-place finish at the one-mile track, driving the No. 33 Chevrolet owned by Harvick.

Harvick won the race despite bringing out the first caution, on Lap 6, with a spin off Turn 4. Hornaday, at 51 the oldest champion of a major NASCAR touring series, overcame an early penalty to claim the series title by finishing ahead of Matt Crafton, the only driver with an outside chance to overtake him.
